Products of August '10

It has been just pouring and pouring this month in Mumbai. Not a day's respite.

Not that I am complaining, I love the rains. I so much prefer them to the heat & summers in Mumbai. I would rather get drenched in the rain, than sweat under the sun.

But the rains have also bought a lot of illness, people are falling ill with malaria & diarrhea & flu. Almost everyone I know is battling something. I hope everyone gets well soon!

Chalo, Now it is time to go through my hits & misses of the month

1. Revlon Super Lustrous Lip Gloss in Cherries in the Glow: I first sported this lipgloss on Divija's Blog, and I knew I wanted this. I finally laid my hands on this last month, and I absolutely love it! In the bottle it looks like a plain cherry red, that you fear might be too bright. On the lips, it is a sheer fleshy red pink that looks very natural.

It has hardly any shimmer, and it goes with all kinds of eye makeup looks. I think I may have found my HG Nude Lip Gloss. It…

Sesame Oil for Skin

Recently I ran out of my regular makeup remover, and was looking for something strong, yet gentle on the eye to remove my Bourjois Effet Lash Mascara. This mascara is enriched with Kohl and thus is a little difficult to get off. It messes up the entire area, it is very heavily pigmented.

I happened to come across a bottle of Sesame oil in my cabinet and I thought, why not. As it turns out, I was soon berating myself for not having used this earlier. It not only dissolved all my mascara in a jiffy, it also came off very easily with a damp cotton wool. I didn't experience any oiliness or greasiness once I had wiped it off and it also, surprisingly left my skin feeling very soft.

I began researching a bit on this oil and I found that this oil is known as the Queen of Oils due to this high content of Vit E - a natural antioxidant and maximum polyunsaturated fatty acids which give it healing properties.
Sesame oil contains vitamin E in abundance along with vitamin B complex and vitami…

Braun Silk Epil Review

The female self torture technique - I epilate.

Let me state this upfront, the model I have is more than 10 years old (Yup, this has a very long life). At that time only 2 versions were available in India - Regular & Sensitive (had two attachments, one for arms/legs, other for more sensitive areas). My mom had bought the regular one for some 2000 bucks. She used it for around 7 years after which she gave it to me. I have been using this since the last 3 years. The box is no longer with me so I don't know the model number.

These days I you have a huge variety in Braun. (You can check them out here) I had initially decided against doing this review because the model I am reviewing is not even available any more (it's so old I can't even find any images of it online), but some readers have been requesting for it.

Pros:

1. It combines the best benefits of both waxing and shaving. Hair growth is slow just like waxing, you won't see new hair for upto 4 weeks, and like s…

Are You in need of a Makeunder?

Sangeeta, (who happens to be my BFF from High School - yea, we go back a long way!) sent me a link yesterday on Makeunders on Oprah's site.

I was intrigued, what is this makeunder? As I read I discovered that it was an intervention designed for women who wear far too much makeup on a daily basis, so much makeup that it makes them look wannabe and overdone.

The women who appeared on the show spent upto 20 hours a week, teasing their hair styles and blending their pale blue eye shadows to perfection.

I personally feel that makeup should only subtlety enhance your features, & if  it makes you look older, even if you are 16, understand that you are doing something wrong, unless that looking older is your motive.

Makeup should make you look younger, fresher and healthier than you are and it should do this in a manner so subtle that even in harsh daylight you seem like you have hardly used any makeup. From the two above images, the most glaring mistake they seem to have made in ter…

My Kajal Bleeds - Help!

I got this query from Grishma:

I want your help/advice on the best kajal/kohl pencil that DOES NOT BLEED (Sorry about the caps... It just shows how frustrated I am with all the kajal pencils...)

I have tried all variants available in the following brands: Eyetex, Shringar, Maybelline, Elle 18, Revlon, Biotique, Lotus, Himalaya, Shenaz Hussain, Street wear (and forgot a few more brands).

Not one of them stays on my eyes... in just 2 to 3 hours it looks like i have been hit by someone and its just black all below my waterline... So can you pls help. I have tried all variants of Lakme too.. I just have that one kajal to try (the one that you have reviewed)... But the amount i have wasted on kajals... I don't even have a count... Grishma

First of all, thanks Grishma, for the sweet comment. I am really sorry that you have ended up wasting so much money on so many kajals from a whole lot of brands. Makeup can be frustrating at times.

Getting on with your problem, I understand that you…

Factors Affecting Skin Care Product Performance

Most skin care brands classify products into 4 categories: oily/acne prone skin, normal skin, dry skin and sensitive or aging skin.

However a lot of times I find that products meant for dry skin on the market do nothing for me.

I know a lot of girls with acne who go through the same maze, trying product after product as recommended by friends as Holy Grail, but find them of little help.

I got thinking on what causes us to experience these products differently.

1. Skin Type: The most important factor, a lot of us actually don't really know our skin type. A professional consultation with a dermatologist might be of help here. Also our skin type rarely stays constant over the months and years.

I used to have extremely oily, acne prone skin until 2 years back. As I began spending more and more time in AC Environments and also crossed 25, my skin has started to show some dryness. I don't get acne anymore, I get dry patches during winters. During monsoons, my skin becomes as norma…

Tag: Would You Rather?

I got tagged for this by the lovely Cynthia who writes the blog India Vanity Case. Thanks CZ & here it goes:

1 .Would you rather go out with messy hair and nice make-up or Nice hair and no make-up?

Nice make & messy hair is everyday reality for me. My hair is very rebellious and refuses to behave.
2.Would you rather shave your eyebrows or have your eyelashes fall out?

Oh No! I guess this is just a once time thing, so I would shave my eyebrows. At the rate they grow back I would be ok in a week.
3.Would you rather forget to put Mascara on 1 eye or Blush on one side of your face?

Blush on one side.

4.Would you rather shop all Lakme products or all Streetwear for a whole year?

Lakme.

5.Would you rather leave the house with an obvious foundation line or overdone blush?

Overdone blush, I could pretend I am channeling a Giesha look

6.Would you give up your makeup for one year or your Internet for one year?

That's not even comparable. How could you compare makeup with the net. I guess…

Tag: 12 Beauty Questions

Mehak from Peaches & Blush Blog tagged me on this. She is another blush addict and has a very fun blog. Do take time out to read it.

1. Whats your favourite makeup look?

Deep brown eyeliner with a pink lip gloss. I sometimes skip blush as my skin tends to look a little pink on its own.

2. Do you have a beauty vice?

Too many products. I just have too many makeup products, and yeh dil maange even more. That would be my vice.

3. What part of your body do you love?

My Hands, I guess, because I love beautifying them with nail paints & different wrist jewellery

4. Who is your beauty icon?

Kate Winslet for looking so fresh in her makeup, as well as Katrina Kaif. They both have great make up artists, who I am itching to get a makeover from :-P

5. What beauty product makes you feel instantly good?

Surprising I can't think of any. I would have to music here, because I am a bigger music addict than makeup. Listening to a peppy number instantly perks my mood.

6. How do you look after yo…

Nail Paints - The Big 3

Nail paints really figure low on my list of make-up priorities. I rarely pay much attention to them and would pick them depending on the colors I liked. Until I started to read the "Green Beauty Bible". The book says that nails paints are the most toxic things on our dressing tables. A concoction of chemicals that are rarely revealed, nail paints could be damaging your nails, and worse be a potential health risk.

The 3 main culprits in nail paints are the Big 3 - dibutyl phthalate (DBP), formaldehyde, and toluene. They've been linked to problems ranging from skin irritation in people to birth defects in animals. Nail polish that contains these 3 is considered a hazardous waste by some regulatory bodies (e.g. Los Angeles Department of Public Works).
DBP is a plasticiser to prevent chips and cracks in nail paints. This helps the paint last longer.A resin, tosylamide/formaldehyde resin, makes the polish tough and resilient. Toluene (methylbenzene, toluol, phenylmethane) is …

LUSH Angels on Bare Skin - Review

What Lush claims: Picture a cleanser called Angels on Bare Skin and you probably wouldn't imagine a lump of stuff resembling grainy, grey putty. We could try to make it more attractive to look at but that would be at the expense of its true beauty: its ability to cleanse and exfoliate your facial skin. We based it on a medieval recipe that would have been excruciatingly expensive at the time. To make you face 'faire and smoothe' take a small, pea-sized piece in your hands, smooth it all over damp skin and wash it off. The ground almonds exfoliate, lavender oil helps to balance oil production, kaolin (china clay) absorbs oils, rose softens your skin and glycerine helps it to absorb and retain moisture.

Ingredients: Ground Almonds (Prunus dulcis), Glycerine, Kaolin, Water (Aqua), Lavender Oil (Lavendula hybrida), Rose Absolute (Rosa centifolia), Lavender Flowers (Lavendula hybrida).

Price: Rs. 585/- for 100 gms.

How to use: take a peanut size amount of the cleanser. Add some w…

Aisha - Sonam Kapoor's Look

I finally I saw Aisha last night.

I quite liked the movie (the book is wayyy better though, and frankly so was Alica Silverstone's Clueless - another movie adaptation of the book), but I liked that Bollywood is now experimenting with Chick Flicks and also liked Sonam Kapoor's make up in the movie.

The opening scene has her in a cream lehnga which looks lovely. With that she has used silver and lilac eyeshadow to compliment the dress.

She wears a lovely frosted brown eyeshadow on her eyes for most of the movie, especially in scenes that show her pottering around the house. I felt it was a tad similar to Jordana's Mocha Frost eyeshadow, coupled with black pencil liner on her upper lashes, pink lip cream and  black nail paint.

She also sports red lips, full on smokey eyes and false eyelashes in the party segments and carries them off well.

Of course, the shoes & bags in the movie are awesome.

She was in collaboration with L'oreal for some make up products, but I f…

Office Eye Shadow Tips

Unless you work in media, IT or advertising, most offices in India tend to be on the conservative side. So you have to be a little careful when choosing your make-up colors.

I personally don't wear eyeshadows to work, and just use mascara & liner. But for those of you who want to, here is a quick guide:

1. Browns are your best friend.
All shades of brown and beige look lovely on the eye and are formal enough to wear to office. They suit all eye colors. Maybelline Chai Latte is a good economical option, but the color payoff is just average. I prefer single eyeshadows from both NYX & Jordana.

2. Bored with Brown, look at light grey/khaki yellow as an option.
Light matt grey is another great option for office wear. Or even light khaki yellows (Jordana single eyeshadow in Mimosa). Light shimmery pinks too are good too, but only a few people can carry this color.

3. Steer away from glitter all over the lid.
It will look OOT and tacky in office florecent light

4. Blue & Greens…

Bobbi Brown - Living Beauty

Bobbi Brown is one of my favourite make up artists (despite the fact that I own none of her products) because I love her philosophy of natural looking make up and using it to play up your beauty strenghts. I recently bought her book 'Living Beauty", and it is a good read with lots of tips & tricks of the trade.

However what stayed with me was what Ms.Brown wrote in her foreword. I reproduce it here for you.

"I don't know why it's not OK to age. I think that a face without lines and planes is an expressionless face - it's a face that lacks warmth and confidence. That's why I am dismayed at the number of women today who are altering their faces in an attempt to look younger. Visits to the plastic surgeon have become as commonplace as visits to the hair salon. I have to admit that there are some women who get nipped and tucked and actually look great. But I see many more who have been pulled so tight that they look completely artificial, and others who a…

Maybelline Color Sensational Lipstick Swatches

Ki had requested for swatches of Tinted Taupe.

Below are the swatches of the Maybelline Color Sensational Lipsticks. I have tinted taupe. The other two I borrowed from my friend for swatch purposes. Each of the lipsticks have been swiped 4 times to show you the deepest tone.
Tinted Taupe (Top): A deep berry brown color. Has shimmer. This actually applies very sheer. But that would not show up in the pictures so I swiped it 4 - 5 times to build up the intensity. It is a sheer berry color.

My Mahogany (Middle): A regular peach brown shade for the nude lip look.  Is on the warmer side, did not look so good on my cool toned skin.

Sunset summer (Bottom): a deep reddish pink.

You can read my review of these here

Aroma Magic Grapefruit Face Wash - Review

What it claims: It penetrates deep into the pores to help eliminate most acne, blemishes and keep the pores clog free and stabilizes oil secretion. It reduces pigmentation and tightens the skin pores. It does not alter the skins natural moisture balance.

Ingredients: Extracts of Orange Peel, Grape Fruit, Lemon, Aloe Vera, Glycerin & pure essential oils of Lemon Verbena & Palmarosa.

Directions: Pour a little quantity onto palm and rub onto face to lather . Massage gently, rinse off.

Price: Rs. 95 for 120 ml tube

Where: New Beauty Centre (Khar) & most local stores

Pros:
1. This green colored face wash is one of the most refreshing smelling products I have used in a long time. It has a very citrusy smell that totally knocks the sleep outta my peepers in the morning. Instantly refreshing.

2. It does tighten pores to some extent. Not sure about the pigmentation lightening though. Yet to see any change. But it does its job of a cleanser pretty well enough.

Cons:
1. This claims to be…

If I have.... My Rush Routine

Life these days is very hectic. Unless one is off to a party, one does not have the luxury to spend 30 minutes on make up. I generally prioritise my make up depending on how minutes I have before I have to rush outta the home to catch my bus.

After my bath, I take 2 minutes to set my hair & apply a body spray (both are essential, I would rather go without make up than skip these), after this,

If I have.... (I call this my Rush Routine)

less than 30 seconds: I just run. Apply tinted lip balm once I reach office.

30 seconds: I just grab the mascara tube and leave. I apply mascara once I get to office

1 minute: Apply mascara & leave. Tinted lip balm on way.

2 minutes: Tinted moisturiser & mascara. Apply tinted lip balm on way to office.

3 minutes: Tinted moisturiser (TM), cream blush & mascara. Lip balm stays in purse and by now you know the routine

5 minutes: TM, cream blush, eye liner & mascara.

7 minutes: TM, cream blush, eye liner, lip gloss & mascara

It ends here…

Hair Straightners for fine hair

A reader recently posted a query on the best hair straighteners for fine hair. First up, I rarely straighten my hair, so last weekend on my trip to the salon, I asked my hair stylist.

This is what she recommended:

1. Before you straighten, understand that fine hair is much more susceptible to damage compared to other hair types. It can get burnt and heat damaged far more rapidly. Don't straighten wet hair or even damp hair. The steam produced as a result causes more internal damage to the hair. Ensure hair is 80 to 90 % dry before straightening.

2. Invest in a hair straightener that is branded, good quality and has ceramic, tourmaline or titanium plates. Ceramic plates ensure that heat is distributed evenly because they get hot quicker, stay hotter longer and leave hair smooth and shiny. Ceramic hair straighteners work well on even the most difficult to manage hair. Buy a straightener with a width of 1 to 1.5 inch maximum.

3. Don't use temperature higher than 180 degree Ce…

July 2010 favourites

July was a good month, make-up wise. We saw a lot of new launches, some good, some not so good. Here are some products that I liked this July

1. Maybelline Color Sensational Lip Glosses: I liked these much better than the lipsticks. They are quite pigmented, shimmery, and last long without being sticky. They could smell better though, I am just glad the caramel sweet smell disipates in a few minutes.

2. Beyu Eye Primer: Using this for a month now, it does make the eyeshadow colors more vibrant and true to form, (I had almost given up on my NYX Champaigne and Caviar Eye shadow pallette - untill I tried them with this as a base) but the lasting power is not greatly enhanced by this. For a more detailed review, visit Palak's Blog Teenage Woes

3. Bourjois Blush in #33 Lilas D'or: Cynthia of India Vanity Case discovered this amazing dupe of NARS Orgasm. Over the last month having worn this during day and night, I have been amazed by its versatality and ability to go with all kinds of…

Happy Friendship Day!

If ever there is tomorrow when we're not together.. there is something you must always remember.

You are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, more beautiful than you see in the mirror and smarter than you think. but the most important thing is, even if we're apart.. I’ll always be with you.

A very happy friendship day to you! Thank you for your support and love. :-)
